How to Trick-or-Treat Safely this Halloween
Ideas for a Fun and Safe Celebration

Coronavirus has drastically altered many of the moments and annual traditions we typically look forward to in the fall. From school sports to harvest festivals to the usual back to school excitement, this fall bears little resemblance to last year.

As a result, many parents are wondering if they’ll be able to keep one beloved fall tradition alive: trick-or-treating.

Since the CDC recommends avoiding traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, Halloween 2020 will look different from previous years. With a little creativity, you can make it an exciting event for your family and kids in the community while minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

Outdoor-only driveway trick-or-treating is an excellent option to enjoy Halloween, especially in communities with lower COVID risk. By keeping everyone outside, eliminating commonly touched surfaces, and creating a fun environment in your yard and driveway, you can foster a safe trick-or-treating experience and make the most of Halloween this year.

We’ve gathered some tips to make this Halloween a special celebration without putting your family or others at risk.

Make prepackaged, individually wrapped goodie bags for trick-or-treaters. Use individual ziplock bags to keep candy seperated

Use gloves and tongs to take candy out of the large bag you purchased and repackage it in small, grab-and-go plastic bags. This technique avoids cross-contamination by ensuring kids are not all reaching into the same bag or candy bowl. Make sure you wear a mask while repackaging the candy to reduce risk further.

Place the goodie bags outside on a folding plastic table with a Halloween tablecloth.

Limit groups to 3-4 kids when trick-or-treating.

If you plan on taking your kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, infectious disease experts recommend you either go on your own as a family or limit the group to 3-4 kids. Make sure others have been following recommended guidelines and taking the necessary precautions if you decide to go out in a group. Avoid peak trick-or-treating hours and popular streets, wear a cloth face mask, and use hand sanitizer regularly.

Use chalk, Halloween-themed stickers, or small pumpkins to mark out the proper spacing on your sidewalks and driveways.

Mark the Driveway to encourage social distancing

This will ensure everyone follows social distancing guidelines and help keep them safe, while also adding to the decor. The CDC recommends allowing one-way only trick-or-treating, so make sure to indicate which direction pedestrian traffic should flow with an arrow or other signal.

Create a fun atmosphere in your driveway and yard with Halloween decorations and a leave-no-trace fire pit.

Decorations are always an essential part of Halloween, but with the focus turned outdoors this year, there are new opportunities to create a unique atmosphere.

Adding a leave no trace fire pit like Fireside’s Pop-Up Pit in the middle of the driveway will keep everyone warm and provide entertainment for the whole family. The Pop-Up Pit and Ember Mat are designed to offer an incredible campfire experience without any damage to your driveway, sidewalk, or lawn.

Add a few chairs and coolers and enjoy roasting some marshmallows over the open flames.

Sitting around a campfire is a fantastic way to spend time with family and friends. Bring the excitement of an outdoor adventure to your own yard with some marshmallows, apple cider, and scary stories.

For an eerie effect, use a fog machine.

The orange light from the flames will cast a glow on the fog for a fun, spooky feel that perfectly complements your glowing pumpkin lanterns and other orange decorations.

We hope these ideas help you and your family create a low-risk trick-or-treating experience and make the most of Halloween this year. We wish you all a safe, spooky, and very happy Halloween!
